Everything Begins With Observation.
For more than forty years, I have been exploring the relationship between art, design, teaching, and imagination. Through making, observing, and questioning, I have come to believe that creativity begins long before an idea takes form. It begins with our ability to notice, to wonder, and to make connections between the world around us.
Observation is where creativity begins
Before there is an idea, there is a moment of noticing.
A color relationship. A conversation. A shape. A contradiction. A memory. A question.
Artists, designers, and creators are constantly collecting these moments. The more deeply we observe the world around us, the more possibilities we discover.
Observation is not simply seeing. It is paying attention.
Imagination transforms what we observe
Observation gives us the raw materials of creativity. Imagination allows us to rearrange, reinterpret, and transform those materials into something new.
Imagination is not simply dreaming about what does not exist. It is the ability to see relationships, possibilities, and connections that may not be immediately visible.
Every creative act begins with this question:
What else could this become?
Connections Create Meaning
The most powerful ideas rarely exist in isolation.
They emerge through relationships—the relationship between color and emotion, form and function, memory and experience, one person and another.
Throughout my life, I have discovered that creativity grows through these connections. A painting is influenced by a conversation. A design solution is shaped by observation. A teaching moment changes how I see my own work.
Every experience becomes part of the creative process.

The act of creating is not simply making something new. It is bringing together everything we have observed, experienced, and imagined into a form that can be shared with others.
After 40 years of making, teaching, observing, and creating, I have become convinced that our imagination is the driving force that allows us to make meaningful connections with which to create.
