This piece began with a charcoal drawing of my brother in profile. I wanted to experiment with layering a screen-printed image of a skull, neck, and upper rib cage over the drawing, creating a visual connection between the living figure and what lies beneath the surface. The plan was for the two profiles to align, but when I made the film for the screen, I somehow managed to get my measurements wrong. The printed image came out smaller than I had intended. I was pretty bummed. After staring at it for a while, though, I decided to stop fighting the mistake and offset the print instead. That small accident changed the character of the piece and, in the end, made it feel more purposeful. It is still one of my favorite mixed-media pieces I’ve made, which is a pretty good reminder that experiments have a funny way of finding their own solutions.
